As of now, I’m setting some odds as I see it for the new coach:

3-1 Kenny Payne
4-1 Bruce Pearl
5-1 Scotty Davenport
6-1 Musselman
6-1 Cronin
8-1 Oats
8-1 Holtmann
10-1 Painter
10-1 Peagues
10-1 Other
99-1 Pitino

No Jay Wright, Brad Stevens, Smart, or Few?
Are you being serious? I’ll assume for a few seconds that you are. There is no f’ing way any of those guys are leaving their current spots (except Smart)!! They all had the opportunity to be guy at Duke and UNC. None of them wanted to move.

If you want Smart listed, I’d put him at 10-1. The issues at Texas would give big pause here.

No I wasn’t being serious. I know it’s hard to tell these days… sorry to jerk your chain.

There was a rumor when TJ was still here that Jay Wright might have been an option for us. Some guys want a change in life like when Roy Williams left Kansas for UNC.

You must of heard the DJ Wagner rumor from your neighbor because it is too early for those rumors.

I don’t have any neighbors. And to add some more sauce, Milt could end up being on Payne’s staff.

I think the 99-1 longshot should probably be 9,999-1. Jay Wright would be more like a 99-1.

But you have Pitino at 99-1 odds? I’m betting the odds are better for several of the guys on that list. I suspect there’s zero chance of Pitino returning.

Some real WTF choices in that list. Definitely don't want some of those coaches here.

The Vegas list gives a little bit of perspective for what some have been saying. The options might not be what the fans are hoping for due to some complications.

Doesn't mean Vegas is gonna nail it.

But if you're looking at this from the outside in, you see a program with no full-time AD right now that is pending NCAA punishment.

You must of heard the DJ Wagner rumor from your neighbor because it is too early for those rumors.

He heard it from Oscar Brohm down at KingFish. "JEFF'S A COMIN' HOME!"

The DJ Wagner stuff has been all over Louisville sports talk, that's probably where he heard it. I loved Milt as a kid but has he ever coached in any capacity anywhere?

Id rather have pitino back than traitor payne.

And yall know how i feel about pitino.

I know it's not realistic but I'd be fine with it too. I'm not about to feel bad about ~$5.5k for some nasty ugly skanky stank trick-ass ho's or $100k for some dude's dad when that dude never played a game. I read an article this week that Ohio State football players made $2.98M from NIL deals; it's the wild west out there now.

Whatever. If we're going to be fine with Pearl than I'll be fine with Pitino. I don't care what other fans or rivals think. But this is all academic because the UofL Board is not going to hire a guy they just fired.

We might end up with a coach that is out of left field and that wasn't really on anyone's radar. I'm prepared for that possibly too.

I really think Payne will be the next coach. I think a lot of big donors will coalesce around him, especially when you look at some of these other “favorites”.

The answer simply needs to be who will energize the fan base and put people back in the seats. I think the pro Payne supporters think he can do it by bringing in above par talent. Hopefully not one and done. The ones who don’t want Payne don’t think or know if he can coach at a winning level. If we don’t win, the fans won’t come. Divided we stand as a university.

I was not in favor of Payne but my opinion is changing as I think more about it. Now that it appears Pearl will use this opening to get Auburn to build a practice facility and huge bump in pay, I and Vegas don’t see him as a strong reality. For Payne, his ties to what UofL basketball was are huge. But I also think he could bring in talent here that would be unbelievable especially in the NIL age. So much of being a coach at a place like UofL is about relationships - with players, with donors, with fans, with potential NIL deals. And all of his past players talk about how he is so strong in relationship building. The big question is the x and o’s of coaching. I think he could use Juwan Howard as an example - Howard brought in longtime head coach Phil Martelli as a top assistant. I could see Payne replicating that.

What about Kenny Payne as head coach with Scotty Davenport as that top assistant?

That would be amazing but I don’t think
Davenport would go for that. He certainly could make more as a top assistant at UofL than as HC at Bellarmine. Also, Payne and Scotty never overlapped anywhere so I really don’t know if they have a relationship or not.

Sweet baby jeebus that is an effing depressing list. 🤬

So you want to bring in KP as Head coach and hire somebody to do the X’s and O’s because as Head coach there is uncertainty that he is capable of doing it. That is sad that people would want that for our program and the only thing that will energize our base is winning on a large scale.

There are many aspects to being a head coach. I do know that he is an elite recruiter and relationship builder so presumably he wouldn’t need support in that area. I don’t know about his X’s and O’s so that could be an area where an assistant provides help. I’d hope that an effective coach would know where his blind spots are and how to address those. Were you upset when Rick brought in Ralph Willard?

Not so sure about that. Scotty was a grad asst at U of L 84-85 and then at Ballard in 86. Wasn’t Payne a sophomore at U of L in 86. So don’t know if Scotty was around the program or not.

Also not sure money is all that important to Scotty. He doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy.

Pitino brought in Ralph Willard when he sensed trouble with the Sypher thing and was trying to protect Little Ricky.

Pitino didn’t bring Willard in for X’s & O’s so no I wasn’t upset. There is difference bringing in an assistant coach for team mgmt as opposed to bringing someone in for X’s & O’s.

You can safely take B.Pearl off the list. He just signed a “lifetime“ extension with Auburn
