Brannen, 45, becomes UC's 27th basketball coach – but only the third permanent one in the last 30 years. The press conference to introduce Brannen will be Monday at 10 a.m.

A UC source says Brannen's deal is for six years with a base salary of $1.5 million. Cronin made $2.2 million last season.

And UC falls further and further behind. I'd be PO'ed at this hire. UC is better than that.
IMO Brannen could have done better than UC if he had waited a couple of more years at NKU, if that is what he wanted. It's good money, near family and friends, plus he doesn't have to move. $1.5 mil goes a long way in NKY.

It will be interesting to see how this works out. I hope he turns UC into a program whose games are watchable.

It does seem Brannen is at least somewhat a hire of convenience more than anyrhing. Maybe Cincy couldn't get anyone of higher caliber to accept either. He might do well there though.

Bellarmine could then get Padgett
Not happening anyway. But, IMO Padgett doesn’t have the resume to land the Bellarmine job if it were to come open.

The Bellarmine job is probably one of the top
5-10 best D-II positions in the country.

Davenport makes about $230,000 for the one of top D-II programs in the country. Bellarmine is not going out and paying someone $1 million to coach there.

I would have thought he would have a made a little more than that. That is his base salary I wonder what type of bonuses and if any endorsement money is there for him. How old is he and coaching at Bellarmine sure is a cozy job with very little to no stress. If he leaves I hope he is smarter than Cronin. Taking a 1.8 million dollar pay increase to move to LA is breaking even.

THIS. Everyone mad at Jurich, John L, Petrino 2003-06, Charlie, and Rick need to remember they all collectively led UofL to the ACC. They were all part of that and we should all be thankful to them for it.

He's a good, not great, coach. It seems kind of like a lazy hire. "We need to do a national search." "One of our own wants to be coach." AD: "Somebody drive across the river and see if NKU's coach wants the job."

It kind of tells you what the Cincinnati insiders think about their own program. No wonder they are stuck in the AAC they are still thinking like a mid-major.

Why, is Brannen a bad hire? He did take NKU from bottom feeder former D2 program to being at the top of the Horizon league which is usually a tough mid major league.

I think it was a hire of convience there was no national search. The hire seems like they were looking to hire quickly and affordable. I don't think the AAC is that tough of a conference so it shouldn't take that much to be successful. In order for UC to move to a P5 conference they are going to have to think big and they're not.

The "one of Our Own' category is rather thin at UC. Nick van Exel and assistant Terry Nelson both expressed interest but I don't believe were given consideration. The Huggins coaching tree doesn't have that many branches. Mick, Frank Martin and Andy Kennedy are about it.

honestly, NKU didn't even have a Div 1 program a few years ago and they've made the tourney two of last 3 years under brennan. here's his stats and he did turn things around. maybe he can simply coach the game. could end up being like a satterfield hire

2012–13 Dave Bezold 11–16 9–9 T–4th
2013–14 Dave Bezold 9–21 5–13 T–8th
2014–15 Dave Bezold 13–17 7–7 T–4th
Northern Kentucky (Horizon League) (2015–present)
2015–16 John Brannen 9–21 5–13 8th
2016–17 John Brannen 24–10 12–6 T–3rd NCAA Tournament First Round
2017–18 John Brannen 22-10 15-3 1st NIT
2018–19 John Brannen 26-9 13-3 T–1st NCAA Tournament First Round

That's exactly what I thought! And Brennan is arguably more impressive, since Satterfield inherited an established FCS powerhouse and elevated it further while Brennan inherited a struggling, new program and took it to the NCAAT.

I guess UC wasn't that worried since there are only 2 competitive teams in the AAC right now. It should be easy to be successful there unless a couple of more teams step up.

Luke Murray turned them down. Find it funny how all of a sudden schools are interested in him now since he is at Louisville

No stress? What planet are you living on? There’s stress coaching in the 6th & 7th region and none at Bellarmine? C’mon!

I don't think the stress level at Bellarmine is at the same level as it is at Louisville. The stress at Bellarmine is self placed by a coach wanting to win. The stress level at Louisville or P5 schools is greater due to the national attention. As much as I want Bellarmine to succeed not many people outside of Louisville know much about them.

Long forgotten but once promising coach Darrin Horn named HC at NKU.

He's had the quite the journey. I mean, he was out of coaching entirely for 3 years after Carolina fired him and before Texas hired him. Darrin is the perfect example of when you've got something good going, stick with it. He should have never left WKU. Good luck to him.
