CBS Sports reporting Pitino blocked NBA move to Louisville.

Piling on is a nice pastime. This is old news based on an old old story.
The State of Kentucky and city of Louisville had a world champion ABA franchise with the Colonels and were not a viable candidate for merger.

Stern was King of the Castle. I doubt he gave two hoots what a college team wanted.

Here is my take on CBS..... the ContinuousBullshitStation. Reporting of this nature is even worse than the manure it is written or recorded on.

You give CRP way too much credit. Morons, Idiots, and smug A-holes. MIA on brains and substance. Can you possibly get any worse? Geez Louise.

The only reason anyone in this area would promote the NBA is in hopes that NBA team would pull resources away from UofL. Anyone who claims to be a Card fan and support the NBA move here is either a liar/kitty fan or very naive and uninformed.

Story is 16 years old. I recall watching Metro Council meetings when Hornets owner Shinn was making his pitch to the city back when I was living in Shadow Ridge apartments. The land out there then was nothing but sod farms. Now, suburbia. Anyway, and I can't recall his name, but then Council President was basicallly laughing in Finn's face. He closed one meeting saying "Go Cards." Sure, Pitino didn't want the NBA. Neither did Louisville. The feaux outrage is hysterical.

Actually, yhey were. The city only had to expend ( if I remember correctly Btween ont to three million for a franchise. They wouldn’t. John Y Brown and the Colonels ended up in Buffalo.

Not sure how a college coach and AD could block a huge deal in pro sports. Unless Jurich and RP had some crazy power in Louisville no one knew about. Jurichs n RPs reputations grow daily. Right now it's at the level of a high powerful mob family running a city. If i find out Jurich had his hands in the trash and concrete business in Louisville. Then ill worry.

Exactly. This crap is from the same tired trope that Jurich controlled the media, police and city government put out by yut dipshits and other assorted crybabies. Even if one scintilla of that was true - this was 2001-2002 - neither guy was deep enough into their tenure / accomplishments to be able to wield that type of juice.

I feel the same way as most who posted in this thread. It is absurd to think Pitino and Jurich had enough clout to shoo away David Stern and the NBA. I laughed out loud when I read it. Stern was a great commissioner for the NBA and he had the clout and power. Not Pitino or Jurich. Not in 2001 to 2003.

Disagree.

UofL and the Colonels co-existed for years , even sharing Freedom Hall.
As long as UofL is the number one priority, I'm game.
Memphis State shares the Fed ex forum with Grizzlies.

If the NBA does come to Louisville, the politicians better insist that the team is called "Louisville" and not "Kentucky"....Also, in this age of political correctness, I don't think a white haired Colonel in a grey suit will float too well. We'd more than likely have some non threatening nickname like Heat, Magic, or Fever. Whooooooo! Exciting.

IIRC the buy in for the Colonels was only $1 million. He could not get an additional investor and folded his tent. Mind you, this was a pretty glum period for the NBA - pre Magic, Bird and MJ.

At any rate, I DO recall some article way back about Pitino coming out against an NBA franchise, but after the decision to turn it down was made public.

Being against something and being able to stop said thing are inherently different. For example - I am completely against yut trolls infecting this board with their stupidity but (at least to date), I am unable to stop it.

Where is the right wing outrage coming from. The Magic came from the team being in Orlando and Disney World being the most magical place on earth slogan and the Heat won over being the Miami Vice in a fan vote. How are those names worse than being a Laker or Spur?

Lucky for us. Keep going and one day you'll climb that mountain.

Living in Memphis i've seen an NBA team come in a city that had a solid college program. At first. All we're in and wore Grizz and UM attire. As time went on. You seen a split. You had Grizz people. Then your traditional coll bball fan. And only in Memphis could it be turned into a racial divide. Some say African Americans are the biggest Grizz supporters, and the whites seem to drift away from the Grizzs and support the Tigers. Right now seeing UM attendance. No ethnic group supporting. I could see why Jurich and RP wouldn't want a NBA team in there back yard. I'm sure it got tiresome trying to operate with Cal and UK in the same state. I can respect and understand why they wouldn't want a NBA team in Louisville.

Lakers were named for the lakes of Minnesota where the team originated. Spurs are obviously Texas related. Nicknames that are verbs or feelings are just unimaginative and weak.

I wish there was a LOVE button for your post. I couldn't agree more.

The Colonels suspended operations in 1976. Among other 1976 trivia...
  • Top pop song was Rod Stewart's Tonight's The Night
  • Big movies included Rocky (the first one)
  • The price of a postage stamp was 13 cents
  • Bold Forbes won the Kentucky Derby
  • Bruce Jenner won the Olympic Decathalon
And half the people on this website had not been born...
