Cards win the first game of the series, winning 5-4 but it was not pretty. Cards started off hot by scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning off Memphis's ace Wallingford, who had a 0.43 era going into the game. The big damage was done by Gardner's 2 run double (he is a double machine). Cards managed another run in the 2nd but that would be it. Wallingford settled down and didn't allow any more runs through 7. Funkhouser didn't seem to have his stuff walking 6 and striking out 5. Gave up 4 hits but Memphis scored 2 runs in the 2nd and then 2 more in the 7th. Between the 2nd and the 7th neither pitcher gave up any runs. Sturgeon came in relief for Funkhouser and did ok but Coach McDonnell decided to bring N Burdi in the 8th to get a 5 out save. In the bottom of the 8th, Cards had something going with 1 out as Gardner had a single but was pinched run for White, who was promptly thrown out trying to steal 2nd. Lucas followed with a single, which would have given us a man in scoring position. Lyman then followed with his own single but Lucas was thrown out going to 3rd leaving us with the one run lead. In the 9th, Burdi managed to strike out 2 but also gave up 2 singles in between. We were caught asleep after the 2nd strikeout when both runners stole 2nd and 3rd base with 2 outs. Burdi then got the final out by getting the batter to groundout to 3rd. Whew!!!

Wow.

Thanks for the report. Glad to just get the win. Hope we play better tomorrow.
