The Dec 31st, 3 p.m. women's basketball contest between ACC opponents Duke and Louisville has been cancelled. The Duke WBB program has decided to cancel the remainder of their games on the 2020-21 schedule because of COVID-19 concerns.

Yesterday's announcement out of Durham, NC means that Louisville WBB will not play again until Jan 3rd (for now) at Virginia.. No word yet on any type of ACC WBB rescheduling of contest between the other 14 member of the conference.

The Cards last opponent (presumably for 2020) was Duke. The Cards downed the Blue Devils 73-49 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. a couple of dayd after that contest, Louisville went on COVID delay because of COVID positivity within the program and postponed contests against North Carolina, Florida State and Miami. Duke followed suit and postponed contests at Miami, NC State and hosting UNC Wilmington. Those are all now cancellations for Duke.

Duke's women’s team, which had a 3-1 record, had initially suspended operations on Dec. 16 after two members of its traveling party tested positive for the virus, requiring contact tracing. The Blue Devils consequently postponed games against North Carolina State and the University of North Carolina Wilmington; the program had already postponed the game against Miami because of contact tracing concerns. It was scheduled to play Louisville on the 31st.

Kara Lawson, Duke’s first-year head coach, had said after the game against Louisville this month that she did not think the team should be playing during the pandemic. “That’s my opinion on it,” she said.

On Friday evening Michael Schoenfeld, Duke's Vice President for Public Affairs & Government Relations and Chief Communications Officer issued this statement:

"The student-athletes on the Duke women's basketball team have made the difficult decision to conclude their current season due to safety concerns," Michael Schoenfeld, chief communications officer for Duke University, said in a press release. "We support their decision, as we have supported the choices made by all student-athletes at Duke during this unprecedented time. Duke will maintain our current schedule of competition in other sports and will continue to observe our rigorous health and safety protocols, which include daily testing for all student-athletes and are based on guidance from leading medical experts."

The DUKE WBB Twitter account was a bit more succinct:

"We have opted out of the 2020-21 season."

This is interesting. Hopefully they don’t get the virus as a result of no more restrictions for their team.

I understand their concerns, but this should be a conference decision. This essentially throws a major wrench in everyone else’s schedule moving forward.
