Cards vs Upstate game thread

Ryan still hasn't learned his lesson going deep in the lane continues to make bad decisions with either shooting it or passing .

I’m going to recycle all the LPT talking points about struggling with mid-majors in November not mattering.

But this does worry me a bit. Perry, McMahon, Fresh, and a freshman DJ as guards aren’t ideal.

But it’s also one game that we will probably end up winning by 20!

20 ehh

I'll stick what i wrote before and think this team we see now will not be the same one in feb . Ways to go is my mantra with them.

Umm, maybe not the best performance until the 8 minute mark, but wow, with everybody back, this team is loaded. Look out!

On paper yes, but we have to see them play against comparable talent, size, and speed.

We see what they can be at times and the NCAA isn’t loaded with great teams.

Tonight showed a pro and a con

The pro? We have fight in us when things are going bad. That’s what happened to sUcKs last week, they panicked and their baby freshman couldn’t respond. We are mentally tough.

The bad? This team can have an off night and be beaten by a lesser opponent. We can be upset against a weaker team. If a team can match Nwora and hold him to 10-12 points, I do worry.

The crowd completely got this team going tonight. I was pleased that the place filled up somewhat nicely in the lower arena for a game that wasn't suppose to be close. I finally got to see my Cards live and up close.

Upstate come to play tonight and they were hitting that first half. Patience my dear fellow Cards fans......patience. We are loaded!

Anybody can be beaten by a lesser opponent. It doesnt mean we arent still very good. I dont think any team is going to hold Nwora to 10-12 without focusing on him which gives other oppirtunities. Focus on Nwora and there are 4 other guys that can easily light you up.

No doubt we are a really good team. But critical analysis is important when talking about any potential good team!

But don’t think 1 player getting shut down can’t happen. It takes one cold game and someone will need to step up. And the supporting cast has to get going, because we can’t just out size everyone in the post in the ACC like UC Upstate.

Can we rely on McMahon to carry a secondary load of scoring in ACC play? I’m doubtful thats what Coach Mack wants. We have our star and we need a co-star to step up. We have the depth and role players, but depth and role players alone don’t win in March.

Russ could score a lot, but we also had a dominant Gourgi down low and an elite senior Point guard who knew his role. Then add in Chane who had all the potential in the world stepping up in March, we had the horses. Then guys like Luke, Wayne, and Trezl could just play their roles. On top of that, those guys had won a Big East tournament title ad had been to a Final 4 already.

Right now Nwora is the only reliable guy we have at the moment. A lot of pieces, but who is the 2nd and 3rd guy to be the co-stars?

Williamson taking the next step is huge as he has the skill to do it and we see it every game. Darius is actually doing a good job of playing the role of Point, as he honestly is our only true option to run the offense this season.

I don’t think Fresh is anything more than a backup Point for Darius at this point. DJ might be able to be a good scoring guard too, glad he’s back now for this part of the schedule to gain confidence.

We can be great and will be good, but it’s only November and hopefully the pieces fall into place.

My bigger worry with Nwora going cold isn't if anyone else can step up, its whether or not Nwora will realize he is cold and stop shooting. I think we have the secondary pieces cover him not scoring 20. Sutton and Enoch both showed they could take over a game last year. Kimble didn't do it here, but he put up a bunch of points at St. Joes and did well against the top teams when they did play them.

We have the horses now, and 2 of them just came back. Dieng was great but he wasn't taking over Russ' scoring if Russ was having a bad game. Before the tourney in 2013, nobody knew Hancock would be able to take over like that, and Chane was considered just as up and down as our bigs now. I don't think the strength of the 2013 team was a secondary star, it was that you could not scheme against one guy cause doing that allowed the others to beat you.

But 2013, those guys were proven in tournament time. They knew their roles. And I’m just pointing out how hard it is to win a title and what it takes, the 2013 team had the PERFECT championship DNA

Russ could score at a high level. He was our guy. Nwora

It wasn’t that Gourgi could take up the scoring load, but don’t forget he basically averaged 10 and 9 with 2.5 blocks a game. He provided a game changing skills. Enoch and Malik are both good, but can they change a game like that probably not, but combined they can have that production.

Chane Behanan was just a pure talent. We were blessed that he didn’t fall apart the first 2 years. Do we have a guy like him, no. Can Samuel Williamson be that pure talent, he’s show the potential, but what’s his role going to be?

Peyton Siva is Peyton Siva. That’s why we won a championship. A senior guard that could do it all. He played defense the way Rick liked and had the athleticism to match. He could score when needed and push the pace, but he could bring it out and run a half court set. He wasn’t scared of the clutch moment either. We have nowhere near that on this team. Darius can be good, but it’s not fair to expect him near that level of play.

I think Sutton is a way better versatile option than Luke was, but Luke has far less pressure than Sutton does on this team to carry some slack.

Then you have the role players
Wayne Blackshear was a good 5th starter. Did a lot of things well and not great. Trezl was a monster. Kevin Ware did everything you asked. Henderson, Price and Van Treese didn’t add too much.

McMahon is good as a bench shooter, but if he’s continuing to start and be our second scorer, we should be worried. Kimble is experienced and gives us a few good minutes off the bench, potential to go off maybe? Igiehon and DJ both have potential but are still freshman we haven’t seen at this point.

Yes it’s unfair to compare the 2 teams. 2013 is an all-time great team and this is a really good team with a lot of talent. I’m just pointing out the comparisons to show what it will take for us to win it all this year based on 2013. Right now we have Nwora and Enoch who are playing their spots well, and after that it’s a lot of questions but lots of potential answers.

I have been putting it off but it seems I am going to have to give in. It seems that every game we play is going to be on the ACC network. So I am going to have to shell out some coin and get the YouTube TV channel.

I got the YouTube Channel a few weeks ago because I got tired of Spectrums price gouging. I love it. Cutting the cable baby!!!!
