My bigger worry with Nwora going cold isn't if anyone else can step up, its whether or not Nwora will realize he is cold and stop shooting. I think we have the secondary pieces cover him not scoring 20. Sutton and Enoch both showed they could take over a game last year. Kimble didn't do it here, but he put up a bunch of points at St. Joes and did well against the top teams when they did play them.
We have the horses now, and 2 of them just came back. Dieng was great but he wasn't taking over Russ' scoring if Russ was having a bad game. Before the tourney in 2013, nobody knew Hancock would be able to take over like that, and Chane was considered just as up and down as our bigs now. I don't think the strength of the 2013 team was a secondary star, it was that you could not scheme against one guy cause doing that allowed the others to beat you.
But 2013, those guys were proven in tournament time. They knew their roles. And I’m just pointing out how hard it is to win a title and what it takes, the 2013 team had the PERFECT championship DNA
Russ could score at a high level. He was our guy. Nwora
It wasn’t that Gourgi could take up the scoring load, but don’t forget he basically averaged 10 and 9 with 2.5 blocks a game. He provided a game changing skills. Enoch and Malik are both good, but can they change a game like that probably not, but combined they can have that production.
Chane Behanan was just a pure talent. We were blessed that he didn’t fall apart the first 2 years. Do we have a guy like him, no. Can Samuel Williamson be that pure talent, he’s show the potential, but what’s his role going to be?
Peyton Siva is Peyton Siva. That’s why we won a championship. A senior guard that could do it all. He played defense the way Rick liked and had the athleticism to match. He could score when needed and push the pace, but he could bring it out and run a half court set. He wasn’t scared of the clutch moment either. We have nowhere near that on this team. Darius can be good, but it’s not fair to expect him near that level of play.
I think Sutton is a way better versatile option than Luke was, but Luke has far less pressure than Sutton does on this team to carry some slack.
Then you have the role players
Wayne Blackshear was a good 5th starter. Did a lot of things well and not great. Trezl was a monster. Kevin Ware did everything you asked. Henderson, Price and Van Treese didn’t add too much.
McMahon is good as a bench shooter, but if he’s continuing to start and be our second scorer, we should be worried. Kimble is experienced and gives us a few good minutes off the bench, potential to go off maybe? Igiehon and DJ both have potential but are still freshman we haven’t seen at this point.
Yes it’s unfair to compare the 2 teams. 2013 is an all-time great team and this is a really good team with a lot of talent. I’m just pointing out the comparisons to show what it will take for us to win it all this year based on 2013. Right now we have Nwora and Enoch who are playing their spots well, and after that it’s a lot of questions but lots of potential answers.
