I was again arguing with a UK fan co-worker today who by the way paid me my 50 bucks on our bet on the Auburn again. He gave me 10 points.
But today he wasn't convinced the Cards will be a ACC contender this season because....
We are relying on freshmen.
He says no way will the Cards beat Clemson, NC State and FSU with freshmen at QB and WR. I find it kind of funny coming from a UK fan who have been touting their freshmen for a couple of years now. But let's take a look at these freshmen.
Lamar Jackson, Devante Peete, Traveon Samuel and Emonee Spence all had offers from Auburn. Jackson also had offers from Florida and Florida St. Peete had offers from just about everybody including LSU, Alabama, Florida St, and Ohio St. Samuel had offers from Alabama, LSU, Florida St, and Ohio St. Spence had offers from Michigan St and USC. Even Jaylen Smith had offers from Ole Miss and Nebraska.
I told my co-worker that these guys are top notch players who came to Louisville for immediate playing time. Except for Spence who didn't play, they all showed how talented they are against Auburn. Probably the best team they will face this season.
Before the Auburn game I was telling him that the defensive replacements were better players than the departed players who were drafted. At least three I said. Fields over Maudlin. Harvey Clemons over Holliman and Wiggins over Gaines. It remains to be seen of course but I don't think any Cardinal fan is worrying too much about the defense.
I think the same may be said about the offense. Except for the obvious in Devante Parker, but the newest Devante could end up being as good or better. Peete is 6'6 and looks like a stud. Everybody wanted the 4 star recruit who probably would have been a 5 star had he chose OSU or Alabama. But I think Samuel, Smith and Spence will be better than Rogers, De La Cruz and Harris. I loved Eli Rogers but Samuel looks like he will be better. Then there's Jackson. He's already beat out all three QB's from last season.
Petrino has picked up where Strong left off in recruiting. Louisville football, unlike UK football, has a winning tradition and expectation. The sky's the limit and I told my co-worker that UK may be recruiting well, but so is UofL and we know how to win.
