BS Call

He led with his shoulder. It shouldn't have even been a penalty, much less a targeting call. Total BS. It was a good CLEAN HARD FOOTBALL HIT. If they make this game any more pussyfied, I'm going to stop watching it. They might as well force everyone to wear little cute flags and or play touch football. Pathetic.

And there was just the one replay angle, unlike the extreme closeup of Jackson losing the ball when it hit the ground. I kept saying isn't there another angle that shows Burgess didn't strike the player in the neck or head? I wonder if they didn't have another replay so they went with the call on the field.

Great. We're disinterested now.
That's not it. Petrino went conservative with the play calling. He tried to get Reggie running I believe to set up a half back pass later on. Thing is, it stopped our offensive momentum. The failed 4th down plays are a result.

Burgess ejected for targeting on 1st play from scrimmage. The flag was questionable and the ejection uncalled for IMO.
I don't know what else Burgess could have done. He was the right inside linebacker responding to a slant route pass coming right at him, Burgess only ran about 5-10 yards from his starting position to meet the play. He didn't have the opportunity to go lower. What a shame to deprive a great football player and a great kid from playing in his final college game.

You are absolutely correct. My OP was written in the heat of the moment immediately after the play. I've since viewed it several more times. The officials look worse every time I see it. Burgess barely moved 5 yds and never had time to 'target'. It was just a bang-bang play.

"Upon further review, there was no foul on the play. 2nd down and 10" is what we should have heard.

The travesty is that there is no consistency in the call and it became a judgement and should have been overturned by video. Even the announcers saw it differently and then in a later game, other announcers clearly saw some targeting hits and no penalties were called. To take away a player's last college game is shameful.

That was the worst call/non-call of the game. And, it had some real competition for that ranking. Those refs and replay officials were either incompetent or something worse.
