Bourbon Trail Help

All, I'm planning a trip to Louisville and being from California I really have no clue and I wanted to know how the Bourbon trail is set up ( is it like Napa)?

Also what is the best time to visit and what are the "must see" distilleries?

Any help is appreciated as I know there are some bourbon connoisseurs on this board...also any tips in cigars would be great as well!
