We're going to miss Mangok next season. He had the aggressive attitude, strength, and (later on) skill to score down low and defend.

I'm wondering if the incoming freshman will be able to help early or if Pitino will go after a grad transfer big man next year? As of right now the 5 position is the biggest weakness/question mark next season.

Our bigs are talented, but man they are soft. Mangok was the only "enforcer" we had down there. Jaylen shows promise in this regard, dude needs to work on his vertical a little bit lol and he can take this role. It was clear to me this season that having that "bully" down low - Chane, Montrezl, Nanu, SVT - is what this team missed.

We did miss that enforcer to either play beside Mangok or replace him when he sat down. Besides JJ, like you said, but he is still quite limited in many aspects. He does indeed show promise and actually has the bulk to be effective where Ray and Anas cannot.

However I'm not sure if he can play center which is the position I'm concerned about the most. Anas did little this season to assuage my concerns, especially with Mangok gone.

Also, like earsky has said, Anas isn't really a 5. I mean he is 7 feet and all but he is really more of a forward skill and attitude wise.

I think we go back to the hybrid stretch 4/5 center position Rick likes more athletic that can shoot.

Anas has the potential to be really good next year.

Need him to get stronger and continue to work on his game.
Almost sick of the word "potential". As much as Anas improved last year, it was baby steps. He's got to be able to jump more than 1 foot off the ground. He gets his blocks using his long reach and coming over as help. When someone posts him up he either fouls or they dunk on him. Also he is a horrible FT shooter. Time is running out. Let's see how hard he works this summer.

I like the thought of the offense running thru Mahmoud, much like with Padgett.Hell,Rodney was one of our better passers back in the day .Get the ball in the hands of guys that know what to do with it.

I dont think that's our biggest concern. I think our biggest concern is point guard if Mitchell doesnt stay.

We have 0 experience depth wise at the PG if Mitchell doesnt stay.

Snider cant play 40 minutes every game. And hopefully he doesnt get reinjured, but if he did? That really hurts us at the 1G. And Pitino talked about Perry prolly not much PT first year.

So that means, if Mitchell stays, you will see Snider at the 1, Mitchell 2, King/Adel 3, Ray/Johnson 4, Mahmoud/Williams 5.

And when Snider needs a break, Mitchell moves to the 1, Deng 2, King 3, and so on.

Mitchell stays and we have experienced depth everywhere. Not freshman depth. Mitchell needs to stay.

Hope Williams starts. His highlight clips look good. Here's hoping he gets to town in June and starts pounding the weights!

If Mitchell stays, he is more likely to start at the 1 spot. Q is not guaranteed that 1 spot. This will be one of the major talking points and stories to follow through the summer leading all the way up to start of the season. Guys will be battling for starting spots regardless of class and this my fellow Cards fans is a good thing. You give Pitino what he's asking for next year and you're going to see the floor. There are some talented freshman coming in next year. We will have to wait and see to be sure, but if those guys deliver they are going to play. He is already sending messages.

This team was frustrating for us to watch. I can only imagine what it was like for him.

Who is out there that could fill this spot? If DM leaves, I wonder if RP would look to see if the Russell kid from Grand Canyon might be interested in transferring? Kid has a ton of game - wonder if it would have too much of a Chris Jones feel though?

Doubt Mitchell leaves, but IF he does, then the incoming frosh Perry will have to step up and step in quicker than expected.

That is never a good thing IMO. A frosh point guard is one position that in a Pitino ran system is really tough to rely on. Snider will get the nod because he'll be a senior, and McMohan will get burn too.

Not really sure who or if there is someone out there that could transfer in to help out at center.

Here is my thinking about the 5 spot. I have been a Mahmoud fan for a while but he will be a senior next season and his play this season, with the exception of a few bright spots, has been overall pretty disappointing to me.

Seeming him blow those point blank dunks in the Michigan game was a HUGE disappointment. Hearing about how he lost the hard won 15 pounds over the summer last season tells me something too. Pitino said that Anas failed to keep up his eating and weight lifting regime when he went home.

Now with Mangok gone, Anas is likely the starting- and main- center for this team unless someone changes positions or the freshmen are ready to step in day one. There is Matz, but him getting little to no PT this season tells me Pitino doesn't think he can contribute enough there either. I hate to say it but judging from the past three seasons, having Anas as our primary center leaves me with many nagging doubts:

Will he get strong enough and put on enough weight so he won't get so easily shoved out of the paint?

Will he work on TOUGHNESS and not play so soft inside?

Will he develop a mid range jumper?

Will he be able to score in the post against bigger, stronger front courts?

The list goes on.

Having both Mangok and Anas worked pretty good because you could plug in Mangok against bigger, stronger centers, and Anas against smaller, quicker lineups if more speed and finesse was needed. But now that muscle is gone. If Anas doesn't improve a whole bunch physically and in the rest of his game it just seems like the Cards will be in big trouble in the middle.

Anybody think Dwayne Sutton can be a contributor next year?

I don't get to follow KY HS basketball, so I don't know much about him. He had decent numbers as a freshman at UNC-Ashville.

I think he has all the physical skills and I think he can contribute alot plus score. He is a good addition, but can he adjust to the increase in talent level, plus be consistent in scoring.

Snider had a 2.71 assist/turnover ratio last year (22nd in the country) & was 8th in the ACC in assists/game (4.1). Despite being called out for his on-ball defense several times this year, Snider also started every game he played in.. the only player on the team to do so. Mitchell may play the point on defense when they play man-to-man, but Snider will start at PG next season. Don't let his horrible game vs. Michigan overstate his play over the entire season.

We will see. More than likely he will start, Senior with experience. I get it. Please see my previous post. My point about Snider has nothing to do with the Michigan game. I do not think he was the reason for the loss against Michigan.

Take a look around the country at the PG spot and check back with me. You do not have to do that. What have previous guards in Pitino's system been good at doing?

UNC-Ashville ? Anas will be better next year, but that's all i will say on that.

Team has a # of question marks especially at this time of year because it's just too early to know who will be on the roster and who won't be.

Yeah there are probably going to be a lot of question marks depending on if Mitchell- or others- decide to stay in the draft. No one knows for sure yet.
