Anybody have post game thoughts?

A lot of Indians and not enough Chiefs, and I ain't talking baseball in Cleveland. I don't see a dog mentality in this group. Good quality depth, but I don't see a clear 5.

Malik, Withers, Cross, Locke, & Sam look solid to me, but I mean is Jarrod West or Ellis the point guard? Can these guys hit another gear and step on some metaphorical throats? To be determined. It's early and it will get better.

Immediately love Cross. I like this team. Well, I like every U of L team. We need to stop trying to protect Williamson. He’s a junior and this should be his year. He’s not only a scorer but has improved his rebounding. He’s a double double possibility every game.
Love Locke but needs to improve shot selection. West has that ability to slow down and control the offense. Withers may need to come off bench with Davis. They both have good energy but I think Malik and Williamson need to start along with Cross at the 4. Loved seeing push tempo and putting Cross at the top of the full court press was awesome. I thought he could only shoot.. but has good defensive skills as well. Did I say I love Cross? Curry will be an asset against bigger, stronger teams. El Ellis may be a huge factor down the line. Traynor is odd man out right now. Hope he doesn’t regress. I think Faulkner can be a contributor at some point during the season. We’re young but we’re talented.

I didn't see the game but realistically this team is a whole bunch of talent thrown together quickly and it is going to take some time for them to gel. Mack miraculously duck-taped together a roster full of talent.

A key word that comes to mind during the game was sloppy. Sloppy offense, passing, and almost every other facet of the game. Probably nerves mixed with no CCM on the sideline.

I did like the full court pressure, jumping the passing lanes, and multiple steals on defense.

Liked what I saw from Cross, Curry, Sam, and a couple others. Withers was a mess and kept charging into ppl. Malik rebounded well but still looked rusty which I can understand. Locke can get hot from three but needs to learn he doesn't have to shoot it at every opportunity.

This team has a lot of pieces and talent. I think they'll look a lot better as more games are played and they can gel together as a team.

I could not help but think about the real possibility (not a prediction at this point) that we could literally platoon 2 very complimentary 5 man rotations. These kids are so interchangeable in both skill sets and talent level, that I could imagine how effective that could be in keeping constant pressure on the opponent.

Locke/Faulkner, Ellis/West, Williamson/Cross, Davis/Withers, Williams/Curry.

It is a stretch, but I recall Dean employed it quite effectively at UNC based on having so much depth.

I've heard the guys on the radio talking all week about the game and I honestly dont even know if they watched it. Referencing how bad and ineffective Withers and Davis looked. They were both in foul trouble and Southern was shooting FT's with 8 and half minutes left in the first half. I think for the next handful of games you are going to see a lot of combinations. They better not sleep on Furman or Navy the next few games!!!

I don’t know I would disagree with their assessment. Withers and Davis were ineffective. Seems like withers doesn’t like contact and mixing it up. Davis shot a ill-advised 3 pointer and air balled it. They fouled out of frustration.

There was no movement in the half court sets. And we shot too many 3s without moving the ball. 25 percent from 3s and 59 percent from the foul line. 28 3 pointers is too many.

We got out hustled for loose balls in first half. Locke, Cross, and Williamson played great though.

El Ellis was 2 for 9 . But the offense moves better when he is on the floor because he drives to the hoop and defense has to move. With West the opponents defense can pack it in since he won't drive to the bucket.
We really need Ellis to play well, imo.

Agree 100% about Ellis.

I think it being a late tip-off combined with some rust was really all I saw. No one looked bad. I think this new system will come down to hitting shots. We don't have that dominant guy unless Sam steps up, so we're going to be firing up the long ball!

I know all of us arm chair coaches think we know what happened and needs too. However i suggest everyone go an listen to Ross McMains press conference the other day in it's entirety. He gave an in depth analysis of what happened and needs to and why.
