Any chance we go back to natural grass?

IIRC, most Cardinal fans, in particular the boosters who funded the construction of the stadium, insisted on natural playing surface. The natural grass was maintained and drained so well that there were no issues with the playing surface during the monsoon game against Florida State in 2002. Before the very next season, however, a Field Turf surface was installed, due to the damage caused by excessive foot traffic during a Billy Graham event in the off-season, as well as a preference for the new technology by the newly-hired football coach.

Coach Satterfield strikes me as a guy who prefers natural playing surface. (Also, as a side benefit, the stadium would be more likely to host major soccer events with a grass surface.) So, my question is, is anyone pushing for a return to a natural playing surface?

The demolition of old Fairgrounds Stadium prompted me to think about this, as the AstroTurf was hideous. Looking through the old photos reminded me of how fans were looking forward to getting away from artificial turf.

Why? The surface we now have is the best available. The baseball stadium also has this surface and most “indoor” stadiums around the USA have exactly the same surface that we have.

What exactly major soccer event are you speaking of?

I don't see where natural or synthetic would matter for soccer. Not sure if we even put a bid in, but Cincinnati and Nashville are 2 of 18 cities that could possibly be hosting World Cup games when it returns to the USA in 2026. Those games are tentatively scheduled to be held at Paul Brown Stadium and Nissan Stadium. Paul Brown has a synthetic turf similar to Cardinal Stadium while Nashville is a natural surface.

Our own Lynn Stadium is natural grass surface. I’ve wondered about that since we’ve had good success with our artificial surfaced stadiums.

I’m not a fan of soccer, but if we can get more events that bring in revenue, why not? Also, the stadium has hosted soccer before. The U.S. women’s national team played a friendly there IIRC.

Anyway, that’s not the real reason I want to go back to grass. I just like it better. Call me a traditionalist if you want. I thought most UofL fans felt the same way, but judging from this thread, I’m alone. So, looks like we’re sticking with FieldTurf.

It's been twenty years. But I seem to recall a lotta issues with grass at the stadium. With innovations to "artificial turf", I know of no one reconsidering the decision to install it....

Son, bet you’re looking forward to sitting at the stadium and shaking your fists at those no good kids walking on the grass. Just not the same as when Bobby and Tom put down a new surface. GTFOH

Whatever I'm doing, at least I'll actually BE at the game. And "Vince" needs that money... :)

Your schtick is as tiresome as Zipp's. Why don't you give it a rest. It's boring.

Bro, @zipp is just going to grump to be a grump. He might even be a UKaay fan with the amount of shit he talks.

Btw, @zipp, I’m at every football game. Man, up and come up to the deck, we’ll have some beer and cheer these Cards. Doubt you’re game to leave the Box though.

Bro, GTFOH and go cheer the cats since that’s clearly your thing. Ain’t no schtick here. I’m supporting my team and calling out bullshit. Go get you some of those ten dollar tickets for coRUPPt arena

Just curious- by continuing to support UofL, aren’t you supporting the “clown show”? Why would you not withhold support until they are gone or prove they are competent?

Neeli and Vince have done an amazing job of restoring credibility to our university and city. I love the old crew but things had broken bad and there had to be change. These folks have done great work in a bad situation. Appreciate what they represent and what they’re bringing us.

We cannot say that our basketball and football programs aren’t better today.

As regards the programs, we’ll see. They’ve hired good people with good track records, but those programs had had a lot of success over the years. Not an easy act to follow.

Thanks for proving my point, Bro. What a dweeb.

It's a reasonable question, but it's also where the world is painted in shades of gray...

By withholding ALL U of L support, you're affecting more than a handful of clowns. Most importantly, you're impacting players and coaches who did nothing wrong, incl. the coaches that "Vince" hired such as Mack. Those people deserve support, and attending games and events featuring them is IMO important to continue. I've never once advocated that people stop attending games although I understand that sentiment.

Anything BEYOND that is what I advise against, as you say, "until they are gone or prove they are competent." Mostly, that translates to money. I give no more than I have to while supporting the aforementioned players and coaches. And that's what everyone should do who agree with me...

Fake accomplishments.

I see, bro. “Your” point? Cool. Thanks for showing that you’re a UKaaay Billy. Get on back over to the Lair where you belong. Hope mammy cooks you a nice supper over in Floyd county

Beantown hit the nail on the head. The cost to maintain drove the decision. If I recall correctly at the time the change was made it cost around $100K a year to maintain the grass field.

The only clown I’m seeing is the circus act that is you and your life, bro. GTFOH, I’m not starting stuff with anyone but if you want to step to me, I’ll sure as hell step up. Your dumb ass prolly doesn’t even know UofL existed before rick and Bobby.
