That's what Telandar wrote 25 years ago.
Reportedly a company/booster in Miami announced he will pay 6000 to each football player now and future for NIL access. On a hundred man team that would be a 600,000 ad write off for him.
Who will go 10 thousand per player?
20 thousand?
Oklahoma oil. Texas. Texas aTm.
Arkansas where the Walton family lives...
Ford motors willing to sign up Uof L?
Toyota or Ashland Oil UK?.?
FedEx for Memphis?

This ain't gonna end real good.

This could turn into a big nothing burger, but…

U of L’s best days could be on tape (digital ;) )

We don’t have the money to compete for the top talent.

And before you say it, even if we did have it, we’re STILL fighting the same blue bloods for talent. And how’s that working out for us now, on what’s “supposed” to be a level field?

Oh but the poor players have been so abused. Sometimes just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. They have killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Now we just sit back and watch the slow death of college sports

Only the slow death of the smaller programs. With minimal breadth of corporate support. Louisville included.
The financial support for UofL sports from its fans seems to be as strong now as ever before. I’m not sure where you are going with your comment. Most local business ownership is very aware of the importance of our academic and athletic ventures and seem to be in support of those programs. So . . . . . .? Perhaps I’m misunderstanding where you are going. Now if you are talking of Louisville’s support from Frankfort, that has always been missing in my opinion.

GO CARDS!!!

I agree with the local support but I don’t see real deep pockets that can keep up with some of the financial competition will face with this new system. I don’t think we can expect the UPS, GE, Ford, or even Papa John’s to support UofL since their National brands. They may contract a player or two, but not the entire team. And those are the deepest pockets in Louisville. B&F same thing. Will see I may be wrong

Absolutely correct. The Cards have minimal support from the Big Boy companies. Few companies with adequate discretionary marketing money are headquartered in Louisville metro.

There is adequate fan-level support for major basketball. But probably not FB.

Louisville has one corporate Whale - Humana - and they don't support major athletics initiatives.

I think I answered in the second post from this one. Basically there are very few large companies HQ in Louisville. That's where the big dollars would need to come from. Plenty of BB fan interest here from Joe Fan. Not so much for FB.

A company doesn't have to be HQ'ed here, though, to give money/sponsor an athlete. UPS isn't HQ'ed here, but they donated $$ for the Flight Deck.

And what about basketball?

GO CARDS!!!
Basketball will be fine in Louisville, Lexington, at UCLA, in North Carolina.
Smaller rosters, and a long history of the coaches paving the way in commercials.

Football though....smh....that's a big concern.

Ashland Oil UK?.?
There is no Ashland Oil anymore Bill. Ashland is a specialty chemical company based in Wilmington, Delaware now. They sold off all of their oil-related activities in the 00s and 10s. They have no connection to Kentucky since they moved out of Covington in 2019. It's really sad they enriched their CEO and Board of Directors at the expense of employees in Kentucky and elsewhere.

I don't see major corporations driving the bus on NIL opportunities for athletes. The ones that matter are the deep-pocketed owners of smaller businesses (ie: the guys that founded Planet Fitness, car dealership owners, restaurant franchise owners, etc). I think UofL has enough support from those types of individuals and those types of businesses would like athletes endorsing their products.

I think the biggest negative effect this will have on all schools will be donations to the schools. Boosters will start donating directly to the athletes instead of to the schools.

I’m glad your positive, but at the moment I don’t see anyone jumping up like they have at Miami, ND, and OSU. I’m sure there are more deals I haven’t heard of. I’m not talking about the isolated deals, but the deals including the entire team or at minimum the a entire line.. Those are the type deals that I think will bring in recruits. But we shall see.

That is definitely one possible negative effect. On the other hand, it is possible that there will be increased team/program affinity and thus increased donations. I believe that each school could get different reactions.

Thanks Fred. Living down on the south central border I get out of touch. Kroger Kats I guess.

Well maybe but Kroger is a Cincinnati company and they have a major presence here in the Louisville market as well. So I wouldn’t be so quick to label them as “kats” at this point. Yeah I know about the field in lessington. There are a bunch of UofL fans that shop at Kroger as well. That could also go for IU and Purdue as well. Kroger really needs to be careful at this point.

Lol....yeah. could make it an area specific thing. What I don't see....and I guess we aren't supposed
to....are those big dollar guys in Kentucky and Indiana that are football crazy like Texas and Oklahoma.
This thing is gonna take some time to play out.

Thing is things like the shoe money deals the FBI and others were tied in are going to be the legal road to the NIL.

BillOliver's original Post is a good summary ................... as "this is not going to end well". Can anyone imagine what will happen when 17-21 year old kids have this sort of money at their disposal? Forget for a moment as to who and where the funds come from; think about the affect this will have on those young student athletes that do not have parents or guardians with the financial experiences to insure the money is used in a responsible manner.

Excellent point.

It's will be party time 24/7 for some of them. The coaching department will need to hire additions monitors.

Something else for a football coach to combat......your left tackle gets no billboard or Burger King freebie blocking for the QB with the new car and jersey signing package. What else to tell him other than "act like a professional"....except your supposed to be an amateur.

No, you and other linemen happen to miss their blocks during a blitz until they get a piece of the action.

Kroger is the primary contributor for the new indoor baseball practice facility at Patterson.
