"Little brother
Eddie Sutton lasted only four seasons (1985-89) as Kentucky head coach, but in December, 1986, he contributed what may be the most famous/infamous quote in UK-U of L hoops rivalry lore.
Said Sutton:
“Kentucky is a bigger program than Louisville. Even though they won two national titles in the 1980s (’80 and ’86), Louisville is like the little brother fighting for recognition from the big brother.” Denny Crum’s reply
“Maybe we never will get as big as Kentucky, but we haven’t been on (NCAA) probation three or four times like they have, either.”
Until then, I watched uk basketball. I grew up watching and listening to both but was always a UofL fan first (went to Seneca with Wes Unseld and Mike Lawhon). My parents took us to Freedom Hall (and yes, the Armory). My father loved sports and went to as many different sporting events that he could, here and all over the country. My mother limited it to basketball and horse racing. (Except for a brief weird time when I was little, they liked wrestling.)
The nastiness that exists is because a uk coach could not compete with what UofL was doing, so to save face with his fans, he started the lil brother thing and they loved it. Forget that they were losing, going on probation, again. No, out in this state, it's all about beating UofL now.
They started it.
Go Cards and (sheepishly after this rant) happy holidays.
p.s. Mike and I aren't going to Lexington. We are 0-3 on the road this year. 9 regular season games this season.
