If you had any doubt about how much the ACC loves Louisville…wonder no more. It’s like we not really part of the ACC…just a step child. When they said "only 2 teams did not have a permanent rival", I thought, well, that's no big deal. But then when I see, other teams have multiple permanent rivals, that's ridiculous.
OR Pitt or Syracuse. Bleah!!!I would have assumed that they would have assigned Clemson or FSU as a permanent rival just to try and dick us.
Could be worse though - they could have assigned a permanent rival like BC - that wouldn’t be very exciting.
So you thought what - that Heird was going to be able to dictate things to the conference? I don’t give a shit if Jurich was still here - the ACC looks down their Tobacco Road noses at UofL and, they’re going to keep UofL as an afterthought as long as they can.Weak or no leadership here in representing UofL's interests FIRST and foremost. THAT is his #1 job. It is NOT his job to kowtow to ANY other interest.
"I was vocal to the conference office that we don't have a true rival in the ACC, so we can be more flexible with trying to put a schedule together," Louisville athletic director Josh Heird told ESPN. "What are the tried-and-true rivals we have to keep together? Viewership drives some of these matchups. But all in all, I think everybody is pretty happy -- as happy as you can be trying to accommodate 17 different wants and needs."

I AND YOU should expect our interests to be represented first. That is his JOB.So you thought what - that Heird was going to be able to dictate things to the conference? The only way out of that is by on field / court excellence.

You may not win & make friends, but so what!
You don't bow or bend over to anyone. If he can't do that, he should leave. He's no better than most career politicians. Let's all just get along and collect our paychecks.
DISGUSTING!
What's the benefit to playing rivals? Are you really asking that?Little Zipp - why do you want permanent “rivals”? What’s the benefit?
1. How did he not represent UofL’s interests and how specifically, do you know that he didn’t?I AND YOU should expect our interests to be represented first. That is his JOB.

Who is UofL’s chief rival in the ACC? You know the program that UofL has the most history with, that the fans absolutely demand that they play? And, does any team that you might mention feel the same way? What's the benefit to playing rivals? Are you really asking that?
I don't know about you, but that's the fabric of college athletics.
I love rivalry games like Memphis, UC, UK. You only build & sustain those by playing them REGULARLY.
If you need more details, I can schedule a Rivalry 101 class for you!

I'm going to stop after this post because we just disagree on what makes a GREAT LEADER.1. How did he not represent UofL’s interests and how specifically, do you know that he didn’t?
2. If you don’t think that making friends within the conference that a school is in - and within college athletics in general - then you don’t understand how things work.
3. You want to invoke politics? I think we’ve seen how ineffective and inefficient chaos agents - who don’t bend or break or compromise - are. That kind of talk is worthless.
Before you tap out - just a couple of questions.I'm going to stop after this post because we just disagree on what makes a GREAT LEADER.
But to answer you directly...
1. Exhibit A
"I was vocal to the conference office that we don't have a true rival in the ACC, so we can be more flexible with trying to put a schedule together," Louisville athletic director Josh Heird told ESPN.
Well by God, we NEED one and he shouldn't just GIVE in.

2. My point is you can do BOTH.
Advocate vigorously for those you represent AND have friends. But, JOB 1 is advocating without regard to if whoever will "like" me. They will at a minimum respect me for doing my job.
3. Many career politicians of ALL parties are looking out more for what's good for them BEFORE those they represent.
1. Don't know, but GA Tech has no rival either. Seems logical & they are as close to us as any other school. Before you tap out - just a couple of questions.
1. Who should have Heird demanded be UofL’s permanent rival and why?
2. What is the one thing that makes a great leader?
I appreciate the answers. From my perspective - I’d rather have no permanent rival than ask for / manufacture one with Ga Tech because they don’t have one either. Is that leadership? That reeks of desperation.1. Don't know, but GA Tech has no rival either. Seems logical & they are as close to us as any other school.
2. The BEST leaders I have ever worked for CLEARLY communicate direction and expectations so EVERYONE knows where we are going and how to get there. Sometimes those decisions are wrong but at least we were all going the same direction. Those leaders also are willing to take risks and hold themselves accountable when wrong.
👍
I agree. I appreciate his thoughtful replies but disagree with his takes. The notion of creating a rival seems silly to me. UVA has been our “crossover rival” since we joined the ACC. No one sees them as a rival and no one is excited they are on the schedule. As a paying customer I’d much rather see different schools on the schedule rather than some continual dud. We’ve climbed the ladder being transient and willing to play anybody. That’s in our DNA. I don’t need some Tobacco Road good Ole boy network team on the schedule to make me feel relevant.I appreciate the answers. The answer to the question about what makes a leader is simple.
It’s followers.
If you can’t get people to follow you - it makes no difference what you have to say. By all accounts Heird has the backing of the administration, the athletic department and, the majority of the fans.

The only way out is academic excellence. THAT’S why they look down their noses at UofL. They never wanted us - they wanted (gulp) UConn! So you thought what - that Heird was going to be able to dictate things to the conference? IAW you what exactly are UofL's interest? Tell me who are rival(s) are in the ACC in FB? Do we really have any.I AND YOU should expect our interests to be represented first. That is his JOB.

That’s like asking the ole zipper if Heird will ever match up or equal Jurich. Even were it to happen, there would be some excuse as to why it’s not valid. The only way out is academic excellence. THAT’S why they look down their noses at UofL. They never wanted us - they wanted (gulp) UConn!
2 things here for me.That’s like asking the ole zipper if Heird will ever match up or equal Jurich......
You have to understand who you are - and who you are not.
#1 is unrealistic especially in the changing environment we havein college athletics today. TJ was a once in a generation AD for UofL.2 things here for me.
1-I want an AD BETTER than Jurich. He was great and all, but he, like every human, had his flaws. We CAN do better than him and should aspire to finding that person.
2-It doesn't matter where we are, its about where we are going and setting high bars of expectations to get there. Shoot for the moon and if you miss, you'll fall among the stars.
The last part if your post sounds a little John L"ish" as in "We're just who we are and that's where we are on the food chain". I don't subscribe to that defeatist line of thinking.
Howard Schnellenberger & many other great leaders would disagree.#1 is unrealistic especially in the changing environment we havein college athletics today. TJ was a once in a generation AD for UofL.
#2 it does matter where we are today as a benchmark to measure results + or - in a year or 3 or 5. Otherwise you are just spitting vs the wind in the wind. Rudderless.
Being realistic is one of the prerequisites of using benchmarks to set your goal(s) and measuring the progress towards those goals...keeping in mind to set goals that are attainable and measurable.
I totally disagree with you on using the word defeatist in this exercise.. it is being realistic....realism is a mark of sanity not delusion.
Have you ever held a position of authority and been responsible for setting the mission, vision, and goals for a large organization? If you have then you are missing out in this area on this matter.
A vague and non answer to the points made to yours and whether you have ever been in charge at a large organization tells me that NO you haven't and are full of bluster. Can't or won't answer the hard legitimate questions put to himHoward Schnellenberger & many other great leaders would disagree.
I made the points(we need to aim higher and if you dont think you can, you can't) that I care to make and am not obligated to substantiate my opinion any further than I care to. Sorry about your luck.A vague and non answer to the points made to yours and whether you have ever been in charge at a large organization tells me that NO you haven't and are full of bluster. Can't or won't answer the hard legitimate questions put to him
Since HS is dead now are you using a wegee board to communicate with him to hear what he thinks and would say about this issue? Who are these other great leaders of whom you speak?
Methinks you are a whack job full of himself who knows nothing, nothing at all but likes to bluster.
But you do give this board something to laugh about. The UK in you is coming out...delusional like cat fans.
Manufacture. Perfect word choice. Suits sitting behind a desk don't make rivalries, fans do. Trying to force one isn't going to work and a waste of time. I honestly think we won't see a rivalry in conference until we end up in big12 in x number of years after acc disintegrates. At that point. Cincy or WV seems the logical choice.I appreciate the answers. From my perspective - I’d rather have no permanent rival than ask for / manufacture one with Ga Tech because they don’t have one either. Is that leadership? That reeks of desperation.

I think they took in consideration that UK is our rival and Georgia is GT's rival. They couldn't make Clemson our rival, although we seem to play them a lot but I don't think we have ever beaten them. Hopefully that changes in the future. It’s freaking ridiculous that Louisville doesn’t even have a permanent rival.
Too soon.Josh should go to the ACC headquarters and tell the powers that be Louisville refuses to play the schedule. And he should walk in there with a mask on, and walk out with a few hostages. Give them 24 hours to comply to the demands.
This line of thinking reminds me of when another poster (won’t say his name but it rhymes with Dip) suggested that UofL could simply refuse to pay Petrino’s buyout when they fired him - just because.defeatist
