Peny Boone Consider Returning?

Here’s the problem with us taking him back … the same "80% credits toward a bachelors degree" rule for a player who has completed his 4th year applies to UofL as well as UK.

A typical bachelors degree requires 121 credit hours. 97 hours is enough to be above that 80% threshold. You take 12 credit hours in the fall, 12 in the spring, and 3-7 hours each summer, and you graduate in four years … plus the summer school courses give you the “buffer” to be well above the 80% requirement.

UofL should not reserve a scholarship for a player who has proven over the course of four years that he’s not willing or able to do the course work required to stay eligible.
Amen!

The system is a failure, and while the coaches and the schools are disadvantaged, there will be instances where kids like Peny fall in the cracks.

Education and obtaining a degree? That is no longer a realistic expectation for these athletes considering a professional career in sports.
Maybe he can try the UFL.

I think the problem is that he doesn’t look like he is academically eligible to play. The other issue sounds like there was a chemistry problem with him in the locker room based on comments from other posters.
Wouldn't he have known that if he wasn't going to be academically eligible to play at Louisville that he wasn't going to be eligible to play D1 anywhere else, specifically UK?

Not necessarily … school’s admission departments do have discretion as to whether to accept certain classes that the student athlete has taken at other schools.

Keep in mind that, when he transferred into UofL, he’d completed 3.5 years, so his requirement was 60% toward his degree (about 73 credit hours) instead of the 80% (97 credit hours) it is now.

He might not have needed all of his classes to make that 60% threshold, but from what’s been reported, he’s short of the (80%) requirement now. When UofL accepted his transfer, it might not have told him that one of his classes didn’t transfer, because it didn’t matter at that time.

But you would think that this issue would come up with an academic counselor at UofL at the end of this semester. The counselor would review his academic progress and inform him that, because one of his prior classes didn’t transfer, he needed to take one or two courses during the summer to be eligible to play in the fall.

There is insufficient time to perform all of the necessary due diligence with all of these Portal Transferees exploring multiple schools simultaneously. It is unreasonable to place the responsibility on the school, given the limited window of opportunity. The student athlete knows where he or she are in terms of academic progress, and cannot be disappointed when they discover they are ineligible at a particular school.

Peny Boone has been in the University system long enough to know the requirements for academic progress towards a degree and eligibility for transferring.

Reactions: Rollem Cards
I don't know. Does Jeff want to be known that he can also be a compassionate coach and give a kid another opportunity who made some bad choices and faces his career to end if he doesn't get another chance? Is there a silver lining to the story and Boone is able to show remorse and proves his value to Jeff? How does this look to future recruits who want to play for Jeff? Obviously, he knows the plays. Is the risk worth it? A lot of intangibles that we as fans might not know.
He’s an adult and who needs to learn sooner or later that your actions have consequences. Kick rocks Maybe when someone picks him up it’ll land on heads and they’ll have good luck:/
