Tidbits from McD's presser (now available on GoCards YouTube channel):
  • Potential "closers" include Prosecky, Corbett and Lohman in some long situations if he's rolling as he has the stamina for multiple innings
    • McD doesn't seem to like the term or role
    • He just wants people to get outs when asked
  • Offense includes
    • 4-5 "rock solid guys"
      • I'd guess he considers Usher, Metzinger, Masterman, Knapczyk in this group
      • Maybe Bianco is in this group or certainly the one below at worst
    • 4-5 "guys he really trusts"
      • Beard, Humphries & Benson are in this group or above
      • Peyton or Knapczyk are in this group or above
    • 5ish guys he knows have the talent but need to do it and react to adversity
  • Pitchers include
    • 12-14 that he feels really good about
    • Poland & Kuehner referenced as "older guys" that need to lead
    • Koger, Liggett & Grundy were FR that were mentioned
  • Metzinger can play anywhere
    • Could be their 3rd or 4th C if needed
    • Can back up at SS or elsewhere, but probably slots at 3B initially
  • Rushing and Peyton will C the great majority of games
    • They won't necessarily catch the same guys each weekend
    • They will probably mix it up early
  • 1st weekend doesn't matter where Ps appear
    • Thinks he needs 6 starters to complete 3 games early in the season
    • Don't get hung up on starter v. opener v. 1st guy out of pen
  • Usher will play CF
    • Tells you how good Luke Brown was defensively that he pushed Usher to RF
    • He says he's confident in Masterman & others defensively

Been really impressed with Humphries. I think he gets the start opening day in right. He's got a cannon and he has improved immensely since I saw him last year as a true Freshman.

I think Rushing is one of the 4-5 rock solid guys or should be in my opinion

Reading between the lines, we don’t really know what we got as far as pitching but going to give a lot of guys chances. This is unlike U of L teams in the past where we pretty much knew our weekend starters were. I think we did that last year but everything got blown up with injuries and such.

Speaking of Brown, and this is way OT, his parents’ home got hit hard by the December tornado. It was still standing last I checked, but it is a total loss. The house is on the corner of Lovers Lane and Fairview, across from IGA, if you are familiar with the BG area. No one from his family was hurt.

Verrrry Interesting as Klink used to say.
Been trying to read the tea leaves on this one. If you'd asked me a few weeks ago I would've easily rattled off odds on favorites to land those weekend starting spots.
Now I'm thinking we will see one of the new faces on the weekend.
My guess is Ferris.
Or possibly one of the Freshmen aforementioned?

Glad to hear everybody is ok.

Just watched the presser.
Pretty good stuff from Coach. The comments about Rushing were interesting. I agree the kid is very talented and you have to figure he's either catching,DH or playing 1st base.
His bat will be in there somewhere.
The other guys battling at 1st base are Bianco,Wescott and Cook. Whereas it's usually about who's hitting,he backed off that a bit, saying that he can't put defensive liabilities on the field.
I expect that Coach Williams is leaning towards Poland and Kuehner right now as starters and letting those other two spots be up in the air thru the first third of the schedule.

Koger is a Player. Watched him at Bardstown H.S., teammate of my Step - Grandson. Has a real Heater Fastball. Would look for him to contribute as a True Frosh!

He was in my notes from the scrimmages so I know I saw him at least once. I had to dig a little to get the pitchers' names.
There are a lot of good pitchers coming out of the state. Grundy I believe is another and Ferris the EKU transfer is from Madison Central.
