Attended my first coach’s show of the season last nite at Parlour Pizza downtown. This is the same venue that Jeff Walz had his show this season.
As CJW did on several occasions, CDM took the opportunity to talk to the attendees and listeners about NIL and his program. There are similarities and differences between these coaches.
Baseball is different from women’s basketball in the number of scholarships awarded. All 15 of the women get full rides, whereas there are only 11-12 schollies to divide among the 40 or so baseball players. CDM views NIL as immediate financial relief for his guys paying all or some of their tuition, room and board. From that angle, he is a big proponent of NIL.
CJW does not like NIL even if he has to live with it. CDM likes it in the context of paying direct expenses he can’t pay for. He remarked however that he doesn’t like hearing players want to be a part of his program to receive NIL money. He doesn’t like it to simply enrich players. In that respect, he sounds like Kenny Payne earlier in the season.
I’ve heard few of these coaches voice unconditional support for NIL. Of course, that means more when high performing coaches say it.
