Louisville has the fewest tie games against all current ACC members. In 91 games against ACC teams, the Cards have just one tie, a 13-13 affair against Miami played way back in 1950. Obviously, other teams played many more games against current ACC members. And one team has played in more tie games than any other team. I’ll not tell you the team yet, as that might give it away. What I want to know is how many tie games has that team played against other current conference members?

WOW! I stumped the entire message board again. Not a single correct answer. I'm beginning to lose confidence in your all's football knowledge.

Ans: North Carolina’s 1st tie occurred in their 2nd season of football in 1889. But strangely, it was in a game that wasn’t played. The previous year, their 1st season of football, the Tarheels played neighboring Duke twice, once in Durham and once in Raleigh. But the following year, both teams claimed to be the designated home team. Both teams were apparently intransigent in their claim, and as a result, both declined to travel to the other’s field. The game was never played, but nevertheless recorded in the record books as a 0-0 tie!

In 1900, the ‘Heels had an interesting season. In 8 games, they outscored their opponents 163-22. And amazingly, this included 3 tie games where the final score was 0-0 in ALL THREE! Only one of these was against a current ACC member, Virginia Tech. Three of their 4 wins were over current SEC schools, Tennessee (22-5), Vanderbilt (48-0), and Georgia (55-0). Their only loss came against current conference foe Virginia (0-17).

Two years later in 1902, they again had a 3 tie game season, this time all against current ACC members, Virginia Tech (0-0 again!), North Carolina St (also 0-0), and somewhat avenging their only loss of 1900 by tying Virginia (12-12).

Another 3 tie games occurred in 1908. They went a balanced 3-3-3, with their 3 tie games occurring in 3 consecutive weeks; back to back 0-0 affairs against Washington and Lee and Davidson, followed by a high scoring 6-6 shootout vs Georgetown!

Three ties again in 1931, including two more 0-0 slugfests, one against Florida, the other against crosstown Duke. And a veritable field day vs Georgia Tech at 19-19.

In 1956, their 6-6 tie was memorable as it saved them from losing all ten games that year. They finished the season 0-9-1.

Their last tie game was in 1990, a 13-13 struggle against Georgia Tech. The rule change has eliminated further ties, but overall, North Carolina has kissed their sister a total of 55 times! Twelve of those ties have come against current ACC members NCSt and Virginia Tech (6 each), and another 5 against Duke. They’ve knotted it up against other current ACC teams another 11 times, for a total of 28 tie games against current ACC members.

So the answer is: 28.
